Chap.1 -The liana manages to creep up to the top of a large tree whilst relying on it...
-Just look at that young vine, it is magnificent! I planted it in the year of your birth. It is exactly your age. Like you, it grew. It is said that vines are perennial plants since they live for several years. Certain plants can live for over 100 years!
-That means that they become as tall as trees!
No. The vine stock grows, but it remains the same height because it is pruned every year, like what I am doing today. Vines are neither trees nor shrubs...They are creepers.
-Like those that grow in the jungle?
Yes that is right. In the jungle, the creepers depend on trees to climb. This is what is called the wild vines. However, vines that are cultivated by winegrowers are domesticated creepers, so as to harvest the grape that you can appreciate by tasting or drinking the juice. It is from that very juice that the winegrower attains the must that becomes wine after fermentation. The principal species of vines in Europe and in the world (Vitis vinifera) is at the origin of several grape varieties.
